Study: Some Drinking Women Less Likely To Gain Weight

(Undated) -- Women of a healthy weight who drink a light to moderate amount of alcohol tend to gain less weight over time than non-drinkers. That's the conclusion of a new study published Monday in the "Archives of Internal Medicine." Researchers at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital studied the alcohol consumption of more than 19-thousand women, who started out at healthy weights. Over an average of 13 years of follow-up, most of the women in the study gained weight, but those who consumed a light to moderate amount of alcohol gained less weight and were less likely to become overweight or obese than women who drank no alcohol. Cardiologist Lu Wang, lead researcher on the study, said women who drink moderate amounts of alcohol tend to eat less food, especially carbohydrates.
