Stamford Mayor Proposes Job Cuts

(Stamford, CT) -- Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia's first budget proposal calls for eliminating ten-percent of the city's entire workforce. Under the plan, 119 jobs would be eliminated, cutting 49 employees and not filling 49 other jobs that are funded and not filled. The rest of the cuts would be 21 unfilled and unfunded positions. The budget also cuts capital spending by 16-million-dollars, and imposes a wage freeze on all city employees except police officers. If workers oppose the wage freeze, city officials say there will be further layoffs. Property taxes would rise by a little over three-percent, which would be the smallest increase in a decade.
