(Washington, DC) -- The generally unflappable former CBS News anchor Dan Rather is being criticized for saying President Obama, quote, "couldn't sell watermelons." Rather made the comment over the weekend on "The Chris Matthews Show" when he was asked what Republicans might say about Obama's leadership during the run-up to the November elections.

Although some in the blogosphere are interpreting Rather's remarks as racist, others are defending him for his classic downhome Texas anecdotes. "New York" magazine, a reliable bastion of liberal thinking, postulated that watermelons were the first thing that popped into Rather's head while coming up with an analogy. But, the magazine continued, "a good rule of thumb is to just never mention Obama and watermelons in the same sentence."

Former CBS News anchorman Dan Rather says the November elections will be a test of President Obama's leadership.
