"Late Show" Host Reacts To Halderman Plea Deal

(New York, NY) -- David Letterman is speaking out about his extortion case drawing to a close. Letterman took time out during CBS' "Late Show" last night to praise the work of the Manhattan District Attorney's office and its handling of the shakedown scheme.

Letterman did not joke about the plea deal, but read the names of the District Attorney's office staffers who were involved in the case. Fifty-two-year-old "48-Hours" producer Robert "Joe" Halderman pled guilty yesterday to attempting to blackmail Letterman for two-million dollars when he threatened to go public about the late night host's office affairs. Letterman contacted the Manhattan District Attorney instead. Halderman is expected to serve six months in jail and do one-thousand-hours of community service. He could have faced 15 years in prison if the case had gone to trial. Halderman will be sentenced on May 4th.
