(Washington, DC) -- The Treasury Department is reporting the federal government posted a new record monthly deficit for February of almost 221-billion dollars. That far exceeds the previous record shortfall of nearly 194-billion dollars in February of 2009. Last month's figure marks the 17th straight month the U.S. government has posted a deficit. It was in September 2008 that the government last had a monthly surplus. That month the government reduced the federal deficit by 45-point-seven-billion dollars.
