(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. House has rejected a resolution to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year. The measure had little chance of passage but, opening the debate, Massachusetts Democrat Jim McGovern argued that the issue was worthy of a lengthy discussion. Amid the lingering recession, supporters said the U.S. can no longer afford the military mission in Afghanistan. Opponents warned that withdrawing too soon could put Afghanistan back in the hands of terrorists. President Obama has ordered a U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. Obama wants to start withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan by next summer.
