(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. House has rejected a resolution to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year. Amid a lingering recession, Texas Republican Ron Paul said the U.S. can no longer afford the military mission in Afghanistan.

The measure had little chance of passage but, opening the debate, Massachusetts Democrat Jim McGovern argued that the issue was worthy of a lengthy discussion. President Obama has ordered a U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. Obama wants to start withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan by next summer.

Florida Republican Lincoln Diaz-Balart warned that withdrawing too soon could put Afghanistan back in the hands of terrorists.
