(New York, NY) -- New York state's health commissioner is calling on state lawmakers to pass a penny-per-ounce tax on non-diet sodas and other sugary drinks. Commissioner Richard Daines says research has identified sugary drinks as the food group most strongly linked to rising rates of obesity and diabetes among children and adults. He's also challenging the beverage industry to stop, what he calls, a predatory advertising campaign for high-calorie sugary beverages.

Commissioner Daines is urging legislators to resist the powerful beverage lobby and to do the right thing for the health of New Yorkers.
