NY Governor Defends Soda Tax

(White Plains, NY) -- New York Governor David Paterson's plans to tax soda and other sugary drinks may be falling flat. The governor is now defending his proposal to put a one-cent-per ounce tax on soft drinks to curb obesity. Paterson, appearing yesterday at a town-hall forum in White Plains, said the soda tax would help New Yorkers fight obesity over the long term and lower healthcare costs.

Opponents say the tax would not make an impact on obesity and would cost the state jobs. This is the second year Governor Paterson has proposed the new fee, which appears likely to go down in defeat without enough backing in the state Senate.
