Filings For Jobless Benefits Fell More Than Expected

(Chicago, IL) -- New claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly more than expected last week. The Labor Department says 457-thousand initial claims were filed in the week ending July 24th, eleven-thousand fewer claims than the previous week. However, Challenger, Grey and Christmas CEO John Challenger says the figures are misleading.

Analysts had expected a smaller decline of about 45-hundred. In the week ending July 17th, the total number of claims for unemployment benefits, including continuing claims, was just over four-and-a-half-million. The insured unemployment rate was three-point-six percent.
