MLB's Non-Waiver Trade Deadline Is Saturday

(Undated) -- Time is running out for teams to make non-waiver trades with other clubs in Major League Baseball. The trade deadline is 4 p.m. Eastern Saturday. Teams making a playoff push look to get proven, veteran talent ahead of the deadline, while teams out of the postseason race aim for future prospects. A number of big names have already been moved, including some top pitchers. Cliff Lee was sent from the Seattle Mariners to the Texas Rangers earlier in the month. The reigning National League champion Philadelphia Phillies picked up Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros Thursday, and Dan Haren was shipped from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last Sunday. The Rangers have been one of the busier teams so far, also picking up infielder Jorge Cantu from the Florida Marlins.
Although it's called the trade deadline, teams will still be able make transactions with one another this season. However, deals after the deadline will have to go through waivers. Other teams can block deals in the waiver process, where there are no waivers needed before the deadline. A player has to be on a team's roster or disabled list by August 31st to be eligible for the postseason.
